Well, Denzel was not there, but there was enough star power in the room nonetheless to make up for his absence. The NAACP Image Awards this year crowned some new blood in Black Hollywood and if the industry is listening, it better get ready for bigger, better, faster, more! NCIS: Los Angeles star and rapper LL Cool J took home the trophy for best actor in a drama series and dedicated his award to the memory of fellow actor Michael Clarke Duncan, who died a few months ago. Legendary entertainer Harry Belafonte was also on hand to accept in person the Spingarn Medal. He was presented the award by another legend and friend Harry Belafonte. Although Poitier has been slowed down considerably by a stroke, he was poignant and clear in his acceptance speech.
The big winner of the night, however, was Kerry Washington. She took home three awards. One for her TV show ‘Scandal’, another for best supporting actress in ‘Django Unchained’, and the prestigous President’s Award. Washington’s star is definitely on the rise and although it is still obvious from last night’s telecast that her stylist is sabotaging her yet again (pastels from hell, Kerry? Really?!), perhaps the fashion fates can intervene and do her some justice for the Academy Awards?
