James Cameron wants to direct Angelina Jolie in Cleopatra.
The possibility of Angelina Jolie starring in a film about Cleopatra was first announced a few months ago and was met with excitement. Now you can add the “King of the World” to the excitement. James Cameron is in talks to direct Cleopatra.
For those who are unfamiliar with Cleopatra’s history, she was an Egyptian ruler and military tactician who embarked on a ruthless rise to power. She twice married brothers, killing each of them as well as a sister. Romantic alliances with the much older Roman leaders Julius Caesar and Marc Antony helped her solidify power, but her affair with Antony undid both of them. This film will be a remake of the 1963 film which starred Elizabeth Taylor in the title role, and Taylor’s real life love Richard Burton as Marc Anthony.
The word around Hollywood is that Jolie is very anxious to make the movie and with the chance of Cameron directing, this film appears to be on the fast track to getting made. Casting for the roles of Julius Caesar and Marc Antony should bring out some A-list actors’ names. Clive Owen, George Clooney, Eric Bana, Hugh Jackman, Gerard Butler and Colin Farrell have been mentioned for Antony. All could be good choices, but my money is on Brad Pitt getting the role. Taylor-Burton, Jolie-Pitt just seems like history repeating itself.
