It was announced today that TLC has canceled popular show Here Comes Honey Boo Boo after reports swirled of star “Mama June” Shannon dating a registered sex offender.
TMZ first reported that June was allegedly seeing Mark McDaniel, who was convicted in 2004 of aggravated child molestation of an 8 year old. Several members of Mama June’s family denied the claim, saying that the two had not dated in 10 years and June’s focus was the kids right now. However, the executives at TLC were clearly not having it, officially cancelling the show.
TLC released this statement to Entertainment Weekly: “TLC has canceled the series Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and ended all activities around the series, effective immediately. Supporting the health and welfare of these remarkable children is our only is faithfully committed to the children’s ongoing comfort and well-being.”
The show has been on for two years, and has averaged 1.5 million viewers, ranking No. 1 on Thursdays among women 18-34 watching basic cable.
I can’t say whether or not this rumor about Mama June is true, though I hope it’s not. However, the higher ups at TLC are honestly just looking out for the network. Being a part of this kind of controversy, especially when it involves kids and they are producing a show with kids, is not a good look. I’m not surprised by the outcome. It just sucks for the family because this was definitely their bread and butter, and they lost it on a rumor.
