Football season is just getting started, but we already have our set performer for Super Bowl 2015! The NFL has chosen Katy Perry to perform at the halftime show of the championship game!
According to Billboard, the singer was picked after being a potential frontrunner along with Coldplay and Rihanna (though Rihanna probably wasn’t going to do it anyway after CBS cut “Run This Town” from the Thursday Night Football opening).
However, a few months ago the NFL asked the candidates if they would be willing “to contribute a portion of their post-Super Bowl tour income to the league, or if they would make some other type of financial contribution, in exchange for the halftime gig.” Katy herself said on ESPN’s College Game Day recently, “I’m not the kind of girl who would pay to play the Super Bowl.” Guess she either changed her mind, or the NFL cut that idea!
I like Katy, and I think she is a great choice for a halftime performance. I use to think that artists with more longevity in the industry should only perform, but I think we’re running out of legendary folks who can put on good shows to draw in ratings. Katy definitely has brought the hits over her career so far, so I think she will be able to put on an amazing show. Congrats to her for this honor!
