Daniel Radcliffe Talks Romance, Hair Extensions and Sex Symbols In New Interview

Daniel Radcliffe — whose latest step in the path to breaking away from his “Harry Potter” alter ego is his romantic comedy debut, “What If” — turned 25 in late July. In the lead up to the film’s Aug. 8 release the former child star chatted with Wonderwall about being too boring for the paparazzi, why his birthday is always kind of a bummer, his go-to romantic gesture, those horrible hair extensions and more. Keep reading for the highlights.

Via Wonderwall:

On being too boring for the paparazzi:
“Going to a club filled with celebrities and with paparazzi hanging out outside is not my idea of fun. I wouldn’t be able to have a good evening knowing that there are a lot of people waiting to take photos outside. So I guess I’m kinda selective about where I go. But other than that, there is no secret to [staying off the radar]. Sometimes paparazzi find out where you are or take pictures, but on the whole, generally I live sort of too low-key a life for them to be particularly interested in me — which is great!”

On why his birthday is kind of a bummer:
“It is weird to think of me turning 25, I suppose, to certain people. I think I’m gonna be in the unenviable position of forever making people feel really old because any time somebody asks me how old I am and I tell them, it just depresses them nowadays. I think that’s gonna stick around for a while.”

On making romantic gestures:
“I think the smaller moments are generally the ones that make up a relationship on the whole rather than grand romantic gestures. I’ve visited people and surprised people before, but not quite to the degree of just surprising them in another country [like his character in ‘What If’]. I was raised to do stuff like [opening doors for women] and to stand up if a woman comes to the table — you should obviously stand and introduce yourself rather than just sitting. Whether that counts as romantic or just polite, I’m not sure.”

On the hair extensions he was forced to endure earlier this year:
“I won’t lie, I was very happy to be back to looking normal. I honestly don’t know how or why any man would choose to grow his hair that long voluntarily. If you don’t look after hair like that well or regularly, you end up looking like a mess very, very quickly –which I was kind of fine with. … I actually liked the long hair for my own personal life for walking around because it makes me a lot less recognizable. But generally speaking, I was definitely very happy to have them taken out and to be back to my own short hair. By the time I was taking them out, I was so ready to get them out that the slight pain of having them all pulled out was worth it.”

On male Hollywood sex symbols, a topic his character discusses in ‘What If’:
“I suppose George Clooney really [is the ideal]. He’s sort of the epitome of cool and that Hollywood leading man thing. But I do think Bruce Willis is a pretty good analogy. He’s sort of pumped up to be the archetypal Hollywood leading man action hero kind of guy. But he’s also a really good actor as well. I think it’s good to look up to him.”

On whether or not he thinks men and women can ever really be just friends:
“I think they absolutely can. I’ve got loads of platonic friendships with female friends. I think the real question is whether friends who are very romantically or sexually attracted to each other can ever just be friends. I think that is a different issue. If you’re falling in love with somebody, you’re never going to be able to keep that to yourself entirely for the rest of your life. You’re either gonna have to talk to them and deal with it, have a conversation about it — or talk to them and then have them stop talking to you.

On how he unwinds during his time off from work and how he maintains his energy in spite of his hectic schedule:
“I watch a lot of sports. I’m very busy, so with any of my time off, I generally just try to see friends and catch up with people ’cause those moments where you can just sit down with friends and chat and catch up are few and far between. So that’s how I relax and have fun really. And in terms of keeping my energy up: I was just born a quite energetic person — and it’s suited me very well throughout my career!”

On his surprising love of American football:
“I’m a huge, massive American football fan. The Giants are my team, but I’ll watch any game. I love it — college football as well. I’ve gotten into hockey recently. I really like that. The two things I just can’t seem to get into really are baseball and basketball. … I don’t really have the attention span for [them]. The last two minutes of any basketball game are always kinda tense and great, but I could do without watching the rest of it.”

Daniel Radcliffe on playing a normal guy for the first time in his film ‘What If’:
“It was lovely. It was incredibly refreshing to play somebody who lives in this century and is just on the whole a very normal guy. … It was unlike any job I’ve ever done before. Normally, there are at least a few times per film that I’ll arrive to set with a real sense of having to psyche myself up for the day to really get into a dark mindset for some of the stuff I’ve done in the past. For this, my job was to basically turn up every day and make [co-star] Zoe Kazan laugh.”

On his average Joe wardrobe in ‘What If’:
“It’s sort of just an occupational hazard being an actor growing up in England: You will end up doing a lot of period stuff — because we have sets already made. So, yeah, there was something incredibly refreshing and nice about how normal this character was and not having to wear a robe or a three-piece suit with a watch or something like that. I don’t think Wallace [my character] and I are particularly similar, but we’ve definitely got very similar senses of humor — and probably a similarly low-key way of dressing in our own time.

Daniel Radcliffe on debuting his comedic side in ‘What If’:
“I grew up watching comedy. That’s the thing that I gravitate toward watching most. So I was actually really excited to get a chance to show off that side of myself that I didn’t think people had really seen before. [There] definitely wasn’t any anxiety around it. It was actually more just very exciting.”

RISING STAR: Meet Gabrielle Aplin, British Chanteuse

British chanteuse Gabrielle Aplin is on her way to cementing her status as a breakout artist of 2014 following the massive success of her single “The Power of Love” that launched to #1 on the U.K. and Australia iTunes Chart, achieving certified Gold status in both countries.

The EP features five tracks from her celebrated Gold-selling debut album English Rain, which peaked at #2 in the U.K. during a chart-run that lasted almost five months, yet has not been released in the U.S. In addition to “The Power of Love,” which was featured in promos for ABC’s new hit series “Resurrection,” the EP also features an exclusive new track – a gorgeous rendition of “A Case of You” by Aplin’s musical hero Joni Mitchell.

Throughout the past year, Aplin has toured with John Mayer, Ed Sheeran and Gotye, performed at festivals including Glastonbury, T in the Park, and iTunes, among others, and headlined a sold out U.K. run.

A self-taught musician, Aplin has been writing and recording songs since she was fifteen, and, as such, she wrote or co-wrote all of the original songs featured on the EP.

Celebrity VIP Lounge had the chance to sit down with Gabrielle to chat about her musical background, her dream tour mate and more! Highlights below:

Danity Donnaly (DD): Gabrielle, such a pleasure to chat with you. I just got done listening to your EP English Rain and wow. So amazingly beautiful. Your voice is pure, powerful and passionate. When did you first discover your voice and how did you get involved with music? What instruments do you play, as I hear you play a few?

Gabrielle: I’ve never really considered myself a ‘singer’ as such. I started by writing short stories and poems. I then taught myself to play the piano and the guitar and that turned into songwriting and then developed into performing!

DD: You are just 21 years old, but your voice makes you seem so mature and so calming. After doing a little digging some of your inspirations include Joni Mitchell, Crosby Stills and Nash and other older souls. You describe your music as ghostly pop and folk with hints of choirs and twinkly things. Do you do a lot of the writing of your music on your own or do you have collaborators? What is your approach to writing?

Gabrielle: It’s definitely a mix. I love to write on my own and have no boundaries creatively, though I also love to collaborate and it can be great to bounce ideas with a few others.

DD: What is your favorite part of the musical process? The writing? The studio production? The performing?

Gabrielle: I think that the musical process depending on how you do it is like chapters and each chapter is my favourite whilst i’m doing it! I love the writing process and how a song won’t exist in the morning but by the end of the day you could have written something amazing, but eventually you get comfortable and want to get into the studio and record. So then recording becomes the best bit for a while because you have an idea of what you want to create and then it starts comes to life. But then. after that stage you get even more comfortable and you just want to tour what you’ve created..

DD: What has been the most exciting part of your musical career so far?

Gabrielle: I think the travelling has been amazing for me. I have been to so many places that I wouldn’t have been able to travel to if I didn’t do music.

DD: You are going out on your first North American tour soon, having already toured John Mayer, Ed Sheeran and Gotye, what are you most looking forward to in coming to North America?

Gabrielle: I’ve never really been before! So i’m excited to just be in a new place!

Danity: If you could go on tour with anyone, who would it be and why?

Gabrielle: It would probably be John Mayer, and iIm so lucky that it has already happened! I supported him last year in the UK and Europe.

DD: When you aren’t doing music, what do you like to do in your free time?

Gabrielle: I like to do pretty normal things. See my family and friends, cook, and I like to paint…

DD: Where do you see yourself in five years?

Gabrielle: Hopefully still doing what I do now!

Check out the song that made me fall in love with Gabrielle below!

Nick Cannon Says Wife Mariah Carey Doesn’t Know Who Kim Kardashian Is

Nick Cannon is still being open with his private life that I am sure Mariah Carey isn’t thrilled to hear about. He recently blabbed about his sexual conquests here and then caused quite the controversy with his “white face” banter (here). But this time with Howard Stern, Cannon got even more revealing, discussing his intimate life with the legendary MC.

“She doesn’t care when I talk about our sex life because our sex life is amazing,” he admitted. But one thing she doesn’t like is him talking about his past lovers like he did just last week.

The good news is that “She doesn’t even know who Kim Kardashian is…,” he said, adding, “She doesn’t pay attention to that.”

And oh how I would LOVE to live in Mariah Carey’s world…NOT know who Kim Kardashian is?! YES, please!!!

In the video Nick explained, “People feel like they can ask me anything, because I say anything. I’m brutally honest, and now my wife doesn’t like when I come on your show! She doesn’t care when I talk about our sex life, because our sex life is amazing. She’s one of the most beautiful women in the world. But…when we bring up — I’m not gonna do it — other people’s names, she’s like, ‘Why would you even do that?'”

Um, hello?! Do you blame her? Especially for bringing Kim K into the whole dang thing…even though she doesn’t know who she is. *blink blink* Straight up SHADE!

Rihanna Explains Chris Brown Romance

Rihanna is back together with Chris Brown and she doesn’t give a rat’s ass what any of y’all think. You may think it is silly but guess what? She thinks it definitely could look that way if you don’t know the whole damn story.

Ri opened up to Rolling Stone magazine about getting back together with Breezy and what it means for her public image.

Rihanna said, “I decided it was more important for me to be happy. I wasn’t going to let anybody’s opinion get in the way of that. Even if it’s a mistake, it’s my mistake. After being tormented for so many years, being angry and dark, I’d rather just live my truth and take the backlash. I can handle it.”

“When you add up the pieces from the outside, it’s not the cutest puzzle in the world,” Rihanna added. “You see us walking somewhere, driving somewhere, in the studio, in the club, and you think you know. But it’s different now. We don’t have those types of arguments anymore. We talk about shit. We value each other. We know exactly what we have now, and we don’t want to lose that.”

So what happens if Chris screws up again? We have all seen that Brown still has rage with his recent bout with Frank Ocean and his other anger management issues.

“He doesn’t have the luxury of fucking up again,” she says. “That’s just not an option. I can’t say that nothing else will ever go wrong. But I’m pretty solid in the knowing that he’s disgusted by that. And I wouldn’t have gone this far if I ever thought that was a possibility.”

But one thing that really pisses the Diamonds singer off is that people still crucifying Breezy just isn’t right. “He made a mistake, and he’s paid his dues,” Rihanna adds. “He’s paid so much. And I know that’s not a place he would ever want to go back to. And sometimes people need support and encouragement, instead of ridicule and criticism and bashing.”

Bad girl Ri does what she wants!

Scarlett Johansson Doesn’t Understand Why She Is “Super-Sexualized”

Scarlett Johansson is the Elle UK magazine cover girl for February 2013. In the issue, the Hitchcock actress, appeared in a photo shoot flaunting her figure and explained how she thinks her assets have earned her a reputation in the industry.

Check out the highlights from the interview below.

“I think any woman who is curvy and wears a gown to an event is, like, super-sexualized. I mean, at the time I was 18, 19. I was young. I’ve always been curvy. It runs in the family. Throw on an evening frock and it’s like all of a sudden you have boobs and everyone is like, ‘Bombshell!’ Instantly it was ‘The new Marilyn’.

“I got married when I was young and it was incredibly romantic and I liked being married, actually. But it is different. To me, being in a functioning relationship doesn’t mean you have to be married. I never think about marriage.”

“I had some problems in my family and publicly, my relationship – all that stuff. It was like, ‘Oh man, what next?’ But life has ebbs and flows, don’t you think?” she added.

“I feel like I’ve been transitioning from young woman into womanhood for a very long time. Now as I approach 30, with the last few years behind me, I feel like growing pains are behind me. It’s just nice to feel happy.”

Kitten Face Is Keeping Her Clothes On, Thank You Very Much

Taylor Swift isn’t your ordinary superstar. The crossover country star can now be considered a veteran star at just 23 (she started the biz in her early teens!). In a recent interview, Kitten Face reveals her favorite moment so far, an unusual contact name in her phone, who her closest pals are and what they do when they are together. Check out highlights from the interview below.

How different is bringing this album out compared with earlier ones?
When I brought out my first album at 16, my biggest fear was that no one would ever hear it. Now I feel really lucky as it’s guaranteed there will be loud opinions on it. Now my concerns are that those opinions are good.

Who were you excited about teaming up with?
I was really excited about getting to work with ED SHEERAN because I love his songs so much — they’re so beautiful. So when we ended up doing a duet, I was just so happy to have his voice on the record.

How did you start songwriting?
It started out when I was lonely at school. I felt rejected — no one ever invited me to their parties. So I wrote it all down and I’ve been doing it ever since.

What’s the best thing about travelling the world promoting your album?
No two days are the same. Recently I got to record The Jonathan Ross Show and an X Factor performance. I’ve never got to do those things before.

How do you find the experience of living out of hotel rooms?
Hotel rooms are fine. You have room service and movies on the TV. I’m used to it because I’ve been touring since I was 15. And quite frankly, the rooms I’m in now are a lot nicer than the ones I was staying in back then. I used to do some touring in a van!

You have a more classic look than most pop stars. Is that deliberate?
I don’t really take my clothes off because I don’t think I can pull it off. Also, most people are only going to focus on one or two things about you — I want that to be that I write my own songs, not that I have great abs.

You’ve got a close group of celebrity friends like SELENA GOMEZ and EMMA STONE. Do you talk about showbiz stuff?
I have friends from all fields — people who are in school, actresses and singers. It’s surprising how we don’t talk shop. You’d think we’d get together and discuss the stresses of fame but we actually just talk about boys like all the other girls. We don’t run through each other’s scripts or compare set lists.

Hmmm. I wonder if Miss Gomez knows who some of Tay’s new songs on Red are about?

Heidi Klum tells Katie Couric: “I Didn’t Cheat on Seal!”

Seal said he thought that his ex Heidi Klum was freaking around on him behind his back, but the supermodel is about to make Seal look like a got damn fool.

Sure Heidi is sweet and innocent looking, but she knows how to get revenge ever so gently. Sure her marriage disintegrated after many years of togetherness but just because they split doesn’t mean she was out doing the freak nasty with other men like Seal thought.

Seal recently told TMZ.com, “I certainly don’t expect Heidi to all of a sudden become a nun… Whilst I didn’t expect any better from him, I would have thought Heidi would have shown a little bit more class… before deciding to fornicate with the help.” The help Mr. Seal is referring to is Heidi’s big studly bodyguard.

Heidi may have denied the accusations through her rep but now she has publicly spoken via an exclusive interview with Katie Couric for her new show “Katie”. Klum explains, “When we were together, I never looked at another man. It was a unique choice of words… I’m used to it. Other people aren’t.”

Oh snap! Heidi doesn’t play! You can check out the full interview with Couric on Wednesday September 12th.

Kris Jenner Talks Birth Control, Kourtney and Scott and her Favorite Daughter Kim

Talk show host Bethenny Frankel chats with KRIS JENNER, mother of the famous Kardashian clan, on Monday, June 25th. Kris opens up about letting her daughters go on birth control, keeping close tabs on Kendall and Kylie, and clears up rumors about Kourtney and Scott breaking up. Plus, Kris gives her take on Kim’s love life and addresses the $750,000 car that Kim allegedly bought Kanye West! In other words, she is just trying to keep her daughters in the spotlight. Check out the highlights below.

Bethenny: So this week, Kim talked about the fact that she was on birth control at 14.

Kris: 15

Bethenny: Oh, at 15. OK. And are you doing the same thing…with your other two daughters Kendall and Kylie?

Kris: Here’s the thing. Here’s my philosophy. Kendall and Kylie are my little ones. When my girls were growing up and Kourtney is now 32 and Kim is 31 and so forth…when my older ones were growing up and Kim came to me and you know, was very honestwith me and said Mommy I think I’m feeling, you know, sexual and this and that. I’m thinking oh God, here we go.

Bethenny: The last thing you need is more…

Kris: Yeah, I have five daughters. You know, it’s like what am I going to do? So you want to protect your kids. What I did as a parent with all my girls. When I felt like it was that time in their life that they were going to that step…

Bethenny: It was different ages for all of them?

Kris: All different ages. I drive as fast as I could to the gynecologist’s office. I said to the doctor, Dr. Paul Crane is my doctor. He’s delivered all of my children and he’s delivered Mason and he’s going to deliver my granddaughter any day. So I trust him with everything inside. And so I said to him, she’s all yours. You can go in the office and have the little doctor patient talk. It was like her first time there and I said you guys got to work this out. I don’t need to know as long as you got it under control Paul Crane….

Bethenny: So your concern was pregnancy? Did you try and talk her out of it?

Kris: No…just all the different things. Well you can try and talk your kids out of it, but of course I had every which way talk, upside down and I did circus acts for her and said this is what you should do. But, the truth is unless you lock your child in the closet and throw the key away, they’re going to do what they feel. I can’t be with her and shadow her every single second. So my philosophy has also been make sure your kids are healthy, well taken care of and educated…

Bethenny: How do you keep an eye on them? How do you know what they are doing? I mean it’s LA and they’re in the public eye also. They have some much going on. How do you even know what they are doing?

Kris: I have Google alerts.

Bethenny: And have you really found out [where they are]?

Kris: Yeah, are you kidding? I get Google alerts several times a day and it’s so hysterical because I’ll go that’s where my children are, really…They’ll come home and go oh we were at so and so’s house. Well, no you weren’t. You were in Malibu at Nobu because I saw you…

Bethenny: It’s always Kourtney and Scott, that they’re not really even together. That they’re breaking up. And during the break, we were talking about it and you’re telling me they’re fine.

Kris: Kourtney and Scott are so together. They’re always together. They have always been together. They’re very, very happy. She’s the one who really doesn’t want to get married. But they’re really cute. I was telling Bethenny that when Koutney’s out of town, he’s at my house every night for dinner. You know what I’m like, he’s never going to go home.

Bethenny: There are rumors that Kim bought Kanye a $750,000 Lamborghini? She’s too smart with her money. Did she buy him a $750,000 Lamborghini?

Kris: Well, she bought him a very beautiful gift, but I don’t have any idea how much it cost.

Bethenny: She did, wow. Well he better be worth it!

Kris: I should have been nicer to Kim. I’m going to start being really nice to her.

Bethenny: If she decided she wanted to get married again, would you be all for it? It’s her life? Or would you be really kind of intervening?

Kris: You know what, with Kim, she falls in love really hard. She’s a hopeless romantic. And I tell all of my children, follow your heart. You know, follow your heart. Dowhat you feel and what you want. What you think is the right thing to do, but follow your heart. Be happy.

Bethenny: It is true. She felt that it was wrong and it was wrong. And when it’s right, it’s right. It’s true. Most women just know in their gut…

Kris: She’s really good with her intuition…Well, she hasn’t been so right lately. But, I think this one, she’s right about.

Bethenny: Listen, we all make mistakes.

Kris: What’s a measly little 72 days?

Funkmaster Flex and Nicki Minaj Duke It Out On Air

Funkmaster Flex’s interview with Nicki Minaj has gone viral and it all stems from Minaj’s management (ahem…Lil Wayne) deciding to bail on performing at the Hot 97 Summer Jam gig at the last minute.

After Hot 97 DJ Peter Rosenberg sparked a feud by trashing Minaj’s “Starships” on the Summer Jam stage, Wayne got pissed. Minaj got pissed and bam, Nicki didn’t take the stage.

During an interview to apologize and discuss, Flex and Minaj argued over Rosenberg’s comments and WHY she didn’t perform that day.

But Nicki was quick to interject, “It’s not about his opinion, because I have opinions about DJs on Hot 97 and I have opinions on Hot 97. But when it’s about us uniting people [on] your show, I wouldn’t dare come on your stage and say something negative about Hot 97, leading up to that concert.”

And she went on to say that when you diss her, you diss her fans. And dissing her fans, pisses her off.

She added, “My fans at Summer Jam didn’t appreciate his comments, nor did my fans who were watching the livestream appreciate his comments. This is streaming to the world. Nicki Minaj opened up that stream to show to kids in London and Paris… that stream was hosted on my website and those requests came from your station, I posted the links.”

Flex’s main rebuttal? He says Nicki should have taken the stage despite Lil Wayne’s word. Nicki said, “Before I had New York radio, I had Wayne. I will never go against Wayne. I can’t believe after all these years he’s still teaching me. After a man goes on stage and disrespects me and tries to rile people up, I still was going on that stage and shame on me. Lil Wayne gave me a valuable lesson in self worth. He tweeted before he called me, and when I spoke to him he said, ‘Nick, we ain’t doing that show.’”

All I have to say is this discussion is a big fat mess. I’m a tad irritated that Flex didn’t have some balls going up against Nicki.

Christian Bale Went On Disastrous Date With Drew Barrymore

Christian Bale covers the June/July GQ Australia looking fierce and tough. In an interview with the mag, Bale admits he dated Drew Barrymore back in the day and he also talks about his awful big mouth angry moment that went viral. Highlights from the interview below.

“We went to see some bloody awful horror film, and that was the end of it. She never called again.”

“I have been deeply honoured to inhabit this character. It was a massive undertaking. Physically, emotionally, every way. But suddenly we were in the final throes. I sat down and asked for a little space. I stared at the cowl for a good long moment and thought, ‘Man, this one really took on a life of its own.”

“You know, it is what it is… We make mistakes – and I’ve made plenty – and I understand the impression I give off. I get it. I’m also not one of these people who has no regrets. Of course I have regrets. Hindsight is 20/20 vision. But you have to move forward,” he said. “And I really can’t worry about what other people think of me. The people around me who know who I am – my friends, my loved ones. That’s what means the most, you know?”

“Think about how strange and unfortunate it would be for my daughter if I couldn’t just be a dad. You shouldn’t make your children suffer because of choices you make,” he said. “I get no greater joy than when I’m looking at my daughter and her friends when they’re laughing their a**es off. Movies are great, but when I look back, it’s the time with my family I’m going to remember. That’s the source of character.”

No matter how angry this guy gets, I still love him. He is one of the best actors of our day.

Check out the rest of the interview on GQ Australia.

Brooklyn Decker Eats Like She’s 12, Booty Dances To Taylor Swift Songs

Brooklyn Decker covers the May 2012 issue of Women’s Health magazine looking gorgeous per usual. Brooklyn once again proves the supermodel stereotype true. Just check out the highlights from the interview and you’ll know what I mean.

“Being married to Andy has given me a new appreciation for my body. He’s taught me that it’s not how thin you are that matters. It’s how your body performs, how it endures wear and tear.”

“One day when we were in London, Andy took me to a track behind a high school. We did a kind of hopscotch down the track, more drills over hurdles, and then shuttle runs.”

“He tried to give me a lesson once, and I ended up hitting all the tennis balls over the fence and smashing my racket because I was so frustrated. I told him, ‘You don’t teach me how to play tennis, and I won’t teach you how to model in a bathing suit.’ And so far, it’s worked.”

“If I stop wanting to work out, then I’m going to be some serious trouble.”

“I try not to think about foods that are too fattening or too sugary. I always think about why it’s important to eat the best foods. By not obsessing over the bad, I tend to stick with the good.”

“[I eat] like a 12-year-old.”

“My director on Battleship, Peter Berg, said that as much as I work out, he wanted me to be strong. He took me to a boxing gym in Santa Monica. After six or seven minutes of sparring, I was completely winded. But I was also exhilarated because it was a new workout that I had never before experienced. And it’s one of the best deals you’ll find. This place charges around $15 for an hour. You learn how to punch, and I promise, you and your muscles will never forget it. I love working my butt off to prove I can do something new. If I don’t keep looking for challenges, life gets sort of dull.”

“Yesterday I returned from a trip to Australia and Munich, so I resorted to my secret, sure-fire method to get my body moving again. I blasted three Taylor Swift songs as loud as I could and started running in place and doing some stupid booty dancing. Sometimes I’ll watch a music video of a great performer like Beyoncé and try to follow her choreography. Yeah, maybe I look ridiculous, but dancing gets your energy up a lot better than running on a treadmill or pedaling a stationary bike.”

“Whenever I’m near a body of water, I love to rent a kayak. It’s easy to use, and you not only get a cardio workout but also do a vigorous upper body workout, pushing and pulling your paddle through the water. And let’s face it: The view is always a lot better than the one you can get in a gym.”

“When I was a bridesmaid for my best friend’s wedding in North Carolina, the two of us and the other bridesmaids hired a Pilates instructor to do a private class for us the morning of the wedding. We were able to play our favorite music and laugh and talk while working out. It was the perfect way to start a day, and ever since I’ve tried to come up with workouts that I can do with my girlfriends.”

“One of my favorite moves is to lie on the ground on my back, a yoga block propped under my lower back, and then pull my legs up while spreading out my knees, making my legs look just like a butterfly. The move opens up my hips and stretches my back at the same time.”

“You create a bonding experience that you never would have had. My hike with Taylor Kitsch [her love interest in Battleship] was very strenuous, and we needed ropes to get to the top of the summit. But when we were finished, we knew each other a lot better than if we had just had the usual dinner and drinks night. Plus, no matter how much time you spend in the weight room, you simply can’t get a better workout for your legs than when you go for a long hike.”

“Seriously, I will drop to the floor and do a plank anywhere, anytime—in my kitchen, next to my bed, in a hotel room. Straight planks on my elbows or hands and then the all-important side planks and side plank crunches.”

“When I see a woman who’s overcome obstacles, who’s done something with her life, I want to say to her, ‘Wow, you’re cool. Your career is awesome, and I’d love to hang out with you.’ It’s a respect thing.”

“Her sense of humor is something we can all relate to. She’s like the inner soul of every girl alive. She doesn’t care about preserving her beauty on camera—and she is very beautiful. She’s very real.”

“She has such an individual singing style—a kind of smoky, old-school jazzy voice combined with a hip-hop vibe. It’s music I’ve never really heard before.”

“You have to love a beautiful woman who knocks down all the stereotypes and becomes one of the country’s best sportscasters. She had to fight for years to be taken seriously, and she did it without once losing her sense of humor or her great enthusiasm.”

“When I was a rookie in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, Marisa had already been in it for years. But unlike a lot of models who get very territorial, Marisa rooted for the new girls. If there was a job she couldn’t do, she’d pass it on to me. That’s real grace.”

“Well, duh. It’s not just her breathtaking beauty that stuns me, it’s her ability to act completely against type, to defy everyone’s expectations, and to go for roles that she just finds interesting, not because an agent or manager tells her the parts will be good for her career.”
